Hatay Field Study After 2023 Turkey Earthquake

As part of the research project titled "Alternative Temporary Living Unit Design and Prototype Production for Post-Disaster Use" conducted in response to the Türkiye earthquakes, a field study was organized in Hatay.

As part of the BAP-funded research project titled “Alternative Temporary Living Unit Design and Prototype Production for Post-Disaster Use (Project No: 23D301)” conducted by the Department of Architecture at FMV Işık University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Fatma Ahsen Özsoy, a field study was organized in Hatay following the 2023 Türkiye Earthquake. The project focuses on developing and testing an architectural prototype for post-disaster emergency housing. Research team includes: Ahsen Ozsoy (Principal Investigator), Nuran Zeren Gulersoy, Betul Uckan, Ekrem Kaynar, Dicle Zeycan, Gulay Kepsutlu, Elif Suyuk Makakli, Ozlem Sila Durhan.


In September 2023, I participated in the field study in Hatay alongside architect and academician Ekrem Kaynar and architecture student Büşra Kök.


During the research process, we conducted brief interviews with key local stakeholders, including Dr. Lütfü Savaş (Mayor of Hatay Metropolitan Municipality), İzzettin Yılmaz (Mayor of Antakya Municipality), Alper Yıldırım (Head of Planning Department, Antakya Municipality), Ali İhsan Körpeş (Provincial Director of AFAD Hatay), and Ayfer Pemik (Deputy Director). Special thanks are also extended to Mehmet Yaşar Okay (politician), Mustafa Avcıoğlu (NGO president and journalist), and Hanifi Dönmez (politician and NGO member) for their valuable support and insights during the data collection process.
